Starting things off

My first blog post for my journalism class dealing with social media. One of the ‘beats’ that I have chosen to cover is how news organizations like CNN disseminate news using social media sites. For the course of this class I will be covering CNN on twitter.

Two interesting stories caught my eye in CNN’s twitterfeed.

The first is an analysis of what President Barack Obama’s political strategy might be following the liberal leaning Democratic party’s loss in a Massachusetts senate race.

The second story is about a Nebraska based hacker’s attempt to shut down the Church of Scientology’s website.

I thought it was interesting to see a balance of a traditional type of story (the political analysis piece) and just a straight up news story about online crime. The traditional and the new fangled, both available on a very unlikely platform. Unlikely, that is, if you are of the opinion that twitter, facebook and other social media sites are good only for inane discussions between teenagers and adolescents.
