Journalist’s guide to Facebook

An interesting article I found on mashable that serves as a guide to journalists on how to use facebook to help out with reporting.

The author uses an example of a reporter who was alerted to a possible story after looking at the status of a biochemist who he had added as a friend as a lesson on how to get leads to a story.

There is apparently an online community on facebook called Help A RepOrter (HARO) that helps journalists ‘put their ear on the ground’ so to speak.

One potentially creepy ethics tip in the article caught my eye. The author states that nothing is private on social media. So I guess to all those who guard their privacy should be aware that they could be on the spot someday.
